Roll Up Them Sleeves, and Apply Elbow Grease

In my last post I outlined my world-wanderings with Meltwater News.   It’s been incredibly rewarding to move from city to city, but of course that’s coupled with tough days.  I’ve met amazing people and have been pushed to confront challenges that I wouldn’t have faced in any other environment at my age.   And they were hard as hell.  I was out of my comfort zone too many times to recount.  It wasn’t glamorous: working together to establish process and work flow in my very first office and initially having a really tough time hitting the sales targets in Philadelphia. There was also that whole WEEK in NYC when we worked out of my apartment because the internet had gone down in our less-than-modern office.  THEN, there was the whole Spanish thing - negotiating contracts, incorporation agreements, and office leases in Spanish??!  Just dive in!  (Shout out to Philly, NYC, and BsAs crews!)

With each and every obstacle, the satisfaction of solving those problems was made sweeter by the challenge.  We worked to make it through as a team.  That teamwork, in addition to my hard work, allowed me to develop as a person - I’ve been galvanized by those everyday challenges into a stronger individual, personally and professionally.

Subconsciously, I was driving myself every day with the “Meltwater Promise” in the back of my head – that you can create your career path by proving successful at the task at hand.  I quickly realized that my momentum could take me places if I ducked my head and charged forward.

What was initially a desire to do business in diverse international cities, made possible through Meltwater News, has now transitioned into a larger “big picture” for me – to continue to grow Meltwater Group into a powerhouse SaaS company.  I want to look back on all those hardships and revel in how we’ve really built this whole thing from scratch.   120 people to 700 people.  5,000 clients to 15,000+ clients.  Another 3 years, and who knows where we’ll be, but I’m excited for it.

I’ve now moved into a Communications role here in San Francisco, a completely new department for Meltwater Group.  I hope to take the things that I’ve learned in the Meltwater school of sales and hard-knocks and pump that into our overall company brand.  Have I ever done Communications before, you ask?  NOPE.  But I’d like to think I know how to talk about Meltwater pretty well so I’m looking forward to just diving in again.
