We launched this blog six months ago. It was started as a place for Meltwater employees to give first-hand stories of the blood, sweat, tears, joy, triumphs and lessons learned in their careers. The content has evolved since then. I wanted to highlight some of the initial posts, which came from employees who’ve been through the International Management Trainee Program.
My First Blogs: One of Many Meltwater “Firsts”
Nick shares his experiences from the launch of the US Meltwater News organization in 2006.
“In Silicon Valley the entire office was a hot group – absolutely high on the challenge to grow the company’s newborn US operation. One team shot off to Miami and opened our South Beach office, another to Chicago, and then a third headed to DC. We were dotting the map with Meltwater News guerilla units.”
Jeff explains how he went from non-profit to venture capital and the common thread he finds in both worlds.
“Seven years ago you would have found me surrounded by children living in extreme poverty in Tibet. Five years ago you would have found me rebuilding a community in rural Mongolia. Three weeks ago, you would have found me working with Tibetan Refugees, a pickaxe in hand, and knee deep in the rubble of a 300 year-old Buddhist Monastery located in a village called Chairro tucked away in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal. Today, I’m on the 2nd floor of a San Francisco high-rise working on investments for Meltwater Group. What’s the connection, the common link, the motivation? The answer is: The world’s best high-five.”
Chris reflects on what a career in sales has taught him.
“It can be brutally tough. I’ve been disappointed to see something I’ve worked on fall though; and crushed to have someone I’ve managed stumble, or even fail. But that’s the thing—sales exposes all the hard edges.”
Shooting For the Stars…and a 1954 Chevy Bel Air
Jenny, our favorite stylish Texan, finds the right fit in sales.
“My own personal career plan began to take shape quickly. I wanted to be a top seller in the company, find a way to move to Manhattan and save up for that 1954 Chevy Bel Air I had been dreaming of!”
Kathi tells her story of moving around the world and the challenges of getting started in Auckland.
“…when the new Auckland guys got their first clients on board it was very exciting! As their manager, those moments have been more thrilling and rewarding than anything else, where everything truly pays off. Also, to see how we grew together as a team was remarkable.”
Basic Training for Business – A Drill Sergeant’s Reflections
Joe describes the sales and management “boot camp” that prepared him for his next career steps.
“Like Basic Training, after the first few months at Meltwater, I realized a few of my fellow “newbies” wouldn’t make it. Sales training was tough. Many were not accustomed to failure, having succeeded for a majority of their lives. They were not used to rejection. They were not used to perseverance. Others realized it just wasn’t the right fit for them. I realized that Meltwater is like the Army- it’s not for everyone”
