Yesterday evening Meltwater hosted the Meltwater Mashup, a social media meetup where experts from VentureBeat, PRSA, Bulldog Reporter and Tweetshare examined the integration of social media in Marketing and PR. Guests also had the chance to demo Meltwater Buzz, our social media monitoring product. It was a casual evening of drinking, chatting, and enjoying the gourmet delicacies offered by a taco truck.
Mashup guests mixed and mingled with social media and PR professionals from all over the Bay Area, including representatives from Linden Lab, Hill & Knowlton, Fleishman Hillard, StudioGood and eHealth, amongst others. One lucky winner won an iPad just for showing up!

Last Thursday evening I was invited to speak on a panel at an event held by Beta Alpha Psi, a business fraternity at UC Berkeley.
The event was part of the organization’s Spring Executive Series, as explained on their website:

Some of my Meltwater colleagues recently sent around a thought-provoking piece published recently in the New York Times. Guy Kawasaki, a co-founder of Alltop, a news aggregation site, and managing director of Garage Technology Ventures, reflects on lessons learned so far in his career and gives advice on building important skills.
His first job, of all things, was selling jewelry, and he says he learned a fundamental lesson: “… how to sell. Sales is everything. As long as you’re making sales,” he says, “you’re still in the game.”
Guy interestingly goes on to criticize the investment banking and consulting professions, advising graduates…

Last Friday, February 26th, Meltwater CEO Jorn Lyseggen joined several other entrepreneurs, venture investors and academics at the 2010 Conference on Entrepreneurship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Jorn participated in a panel, the “Top 10 Mistakes Made by Entrepreneurs,” alongside Gurbaksh Chahal (gWallet), Matt Cohler (Benchmark Capital), Carol Sands (The Angels’ Forum and The Halo Funds) and moderator Mark Leslie (founding Chairman and CEO of Veritas Software and current Lecturer in Management at Stanford). The panel discussed the ups and downs they’ve experienced as well as lessons learned.
One of the topics discussed were the main characteristics of entrepreneurs. Matt said passion makes or…

I recently read a blog post on VentureBeat called “The lost generation of entrepreneurs.” The author asserts that today’s start-ups do not allow 20-somethings to develop entrepreneurial leadership skills. I can’t speak in generalities for all of today’s start-ups, but I can say that at Meltwater, this is simply not the case.
I’ve heard colleagues describe the International Management Trainee program at Meltwater as “entrepreneurship on a red carpet.” In other words, sales people who aspire to be managers at Meltwater receive start-up opportunities with the backing of a large organization (Meltwater recently reached $100M in sales).
Let me explain. True story: a highly-driven,…
