New York city is a strange beast. So how does a girl from Texas find a balance between life and work in the Big Apple? As a young professional always striving for the best, is it possible to leave work and think of anything else but…well…work? Is it possible to switch from work mode to “relaxation mode” without feeling guilty in a world of deadlines, quotas, packed subways, and busy streets? I think so.
These are my 5 tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance:

Whenever someone asks me what I do for a living, I like to give them 3 guesses. Just to see what they will come up with.
Most popular answers?
A. Hair Dresser
B. Artist
C. Rock Star
Hmmm. OK.
So what does this say about me?
Obviously people don’t look at Jenny Gale Howe and say,
“That girl looks like she is a Managing Director for a global SaaS company!”
A Meltwater News Managing Director
But what should that look like anyway?? That’s my question.
I’m different. Always have been… and always will be.
I have a whole slew of visible tattoos, an edgy haircut modeled after the notorious Bettie Page, and…

If someone had told me two years ago that I was going to have a career in sales, I would have thought they were crazy.
However, here I am today, thoroughly committed to a sales-driven organization.

Interestingly enough, Meltwater News software does not sell itself. It relies heavily on the sales consultant driving the sales process, and is completely dependent on his or her ability…

“Mouthwater?” my Dad asked, sounding skeptical…
“No, Dad. … Meltwater… I’ll be an International Management Trainee,” I explained while packing for my immediate departure to California in April 2008.

The Austin Cowgirls and Cowboys
“Sounds too good to be true,” was my Dad’s response. Something inside me was echoing the same, although the optimistic and overly adventurous…

When asked in January of 2008, “What are your career plans? “…
My answer was the inevitable: ”I’m moving to New York to work as a consultant by day, and fashion designer / entrepreneur by night.”
And that was the plan.
I was already designing, manufacturing, and selling a popular line of Pin-UP Girl inspired dresses in Texas with a small business that I had built from the ground up with my best friend / business partner… and we were most definitely ready to take on the Big Apple, 1950’s style.
I also had a BA in Inter-Cultural Communication, a Minor in Russian Studies, and…
