puppy-school

My brother and his girlfriend recently started taking their new dog to puppy school. They learned that the most effective way to train a puppy is to reward desired behavior, not disciplining bad behavior. Receiving no positive reinforcement for bad behavior, the dog is not really interested in being naughty. Anxious for praise and other small snack rewards has him on track to becoming a star pup.

When I heard this story I thought about the parallels to management. The times I’ve performed at my best have been when my manager has given me trust and plenty of positive reinforcement.

“Goooooo the Maaagnetsssssss” – a cheer roared daily by the members of my sales team, the Money Magnets. It’s one of the many ways of cementing the strong team bond we have. Coming from a sports background, particularly Rugby, I’ve had the chance to be a part of many teams and I think developing a powerful team bond is very important to keep members motivated, focused, dedicated and it ensures a fun team culture. As a consequence, my team has fun at work, which builds up the dynamic culture in the office.

What I love about Meltwater is the close teamwork…

Thanksgiving

Wikipedia:
“Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general.”

I have no harvest to reap and I am not American. However, I am lucky to celebrate this day with turkey, family and friends nevertheless.

What is Thanksgiving Day to me, a Swede living and working in the U.S?
• Traffic jams
• Expensive travel
• Delayed flights
• Time to see family and friends
• A long weekend
• Lots of great food
• Happy times ☺

As a Controller within a sales organization, I find the holiday eats…

Trust and Communication- Lessons Learned at Oxford Management Training

Although getting up at 4:00 am to catch a flight usually requires large amounts of caffeine, I was energetic and high on anticipation the October morning that I got up to head off to Oxford in the early dawn. I was heading to Meltwater’s annual management training seminar, held this year at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. Being the nerd that I am, I was looking forward to the lectures, to exploring the libraries and to getting a feel for the atmosphere in the famous town that inspired authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling.

Day one, Saïd…
