The Meltwater blog has a few major topics: professional tips, career reflections and a bit of Meltwater fun. The goal of the blog is to be a resource for anybody seeking to shape their career or looking for exciting opportunities. In that vein, some of our blog posts give readers practical work tips. I think some of the advice given on this blog is important to keep in mind on a daily basis and I wanted to highlight those posts here:

Closing the Loop
Nicole Amsler, Executive Director of Communications, writes:
“Three simple words: “close the loop.” It sounds so simple, so obvious, but you would be surprised how few of us do it and even more surprised by how effective it is.”

Managing Your Manager
“Upwards management is all about expectations management. When asked to work on something, be proactive and respond with what you think the task entails, and more importantly, when you think you can have drafts and finished work ready”

Organizing and Tacking Action Items
“Unfortunately there is no easy way to do good work quickly. Breaking up tasks into manageable chunks and setting aside time to work on them, however, does help manage your work more effectively and helps ensure things don’t slip through the cracks.”

You’ve Got Mail – advice on writing clear, concise and actionable email.

Happy Thanksgiving - from The Swede

Posted November 26th, 2009 By Guest Blogger  | No Comments

Thanksgiving

Wikipedia:
“Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in Canada and the United States. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general.”

I have no harvest to reap and I am not American. However, I am lucky to celebrate this day with turkey, family and friends nevertheless.

What is Thanksgiving Day to me, a Swede living and working in the U.S?
• Traffic jams
• Expensive travel
• Delayed flights
• Time to see family and friends
• A long weekend
• Lots of great food
• Happy times ☺

As a Controller within a sales organization, I find the holiday eats up 12% of our work month… no bueno. However, having a nationwide holiday focused on family and friends is something I find very uplifting and an overall great idea.

Friends in the office have said this is their favorite of all holidays:
“It’s the only holiday where there is no focus on gifts and you are encouraged to take a nap.” I think this is a great summary of this holiday. You get time off from work to see your family and friends, cook a big meal and take a nap after eating the turkey.

So, friends and colleagues, travel safely, enjoy your turkeys, time with your families, and your afternoon naps.
